学术讲座：Australia: Race, Nation and the Rise of Asia

讲座介绍From the late nineteenth century Australians became increasingly aware of their proximity to Asia, particularly to the large population of China and the rising military and naval power of Japan. The first story of Asian invasion was published in 1888 at a time when plans were laid to form a new federation. The Commonwealth of Australia came into being on 1 January 1901 against a background of concern about rising Asia and the vulnerability of an 'empty' Australia. The lecture will address the idea that at federation Australia could be characterised as an 'anxious nation' concerned to keep 'predatory' Asia at bay. After reviewing some of the key themes of Australian history in the twentieth century, the lecture will end with the question of whether Australia to-day can still be thought of as an 'anxious nation'.

大卫·沃克（David Walker）
澳大利亚当代历史学家、作家。澳大利亚人文及社会科学院双院士，澳大利亚迪肯大学教授（退休）。北京大学首位“BHP Billiton澳大利亚研究讲席教授”。长期从事澳大利亚历史、澳洲和亚洲关系等方面的研究，推动澳大利亚研究在中国、印度、日本、印尼等国的发展。著作中《澳大利亚与亚洲》《光明行：家族的历史》已被翻译成中文。
